The Bechdel Test
This article got me thinking.
There really are very few movies that can pass the Bechdel Test ~ with two women in it, talking to each other about something other than a man.
We watched Dark Knight yesterday ~ no conversation between two women in it. The last movie we watched before that was Hancock. Don't think there were any women talking in that one either, although it definitely had one beautiful, STRONG woman. Let's see... before that we watched Kung Fu Panda. Technically there were two girls in the movie, but no girly talk between them, about men or otherwise.
MOST movies would fail the test. I had to think for some time before I remembered one movie that makes the cut: The Mona Lisa Smile. I wonder how many men enjoyed that movie. Some argue that Sex and The City is all about women talking. Sure. How often are they not talking about men, though? And excuse me if I feel that talking about shoes doesn't count.
Tragic. That women talking intellectually to one another doesn't sell a movie, when we actually do quite alot of it.

Hey,
Love your blog. Its really genuine and refreshing.
I have no idea how I first came across it ages ago but I wish you'd write more... but understandably, perhaps you only post when there is something worth posting about.
I feel just as passionately about similar issues pertaining to religion and identity but I never thought you'd make a post like this about cinema. :)
Check out the movie "Bread and Tulips". Does not quite match the criteria of what you are talking about but I watched it for my Italian Cinema class on Feminism. I think you will enjoy it.
Thanks again for the inspiring posts!
Best,
Manesh
Hi Manesh, thanks for the tip, I'll see if I can find the movie. You're right, I'm absolutely lousy at being regular with my postings, but I try. I mostly get worked up about racial / religious issues, but once in a while something else grabs my attention and I feel like sharing... ;)
